stan livedeath: I am so sorry for the turmoil the WT caused in your family. It's downright shameful how people will allow religious leaders to dictate how they must treat relatives who dare to want to leave the JWs. I would be mortally embarrassed for anyone to know I'd never met my grandchildren or spoken to my adult children for years. Especially over something so stupid and ridiculous as a difference in religious beliefs.

I was born here, love it, and will never move anywhere else. There are some serious problems, but we always have and I think always will overcome them. It's still one of the only countries on earth where a child from an insignificant family and a one-horse town can become a millionaire through his or her own initiative and hard work. Basic education is free and can lead to great things if one takes advantage of that wonderful opportunity. That, plus a good original idea, and lots of hard work and long hours can produce great things. It has happened many, many times.
Of course, the path to riches as I described it is grossly oversimplified. There are many obstacles to overcome. My point is it's still possible if one makes good life choices and sound business decisions. The opportunity is there for all, though some do face more obstacles than others.

What if the Christian version of the End of the World came an hour from now?
by Terry inthe next thing i knew, i was knee deep in conversation with a seminary student covering two thousand years of religious history.
damn, how did that happen?i won’t bore you with lavish details.
in fact, i only mention the incident for one reason.i'm no smarter than anybody - but i've had way too much practice chatting with eager christian seminary students.i posed a couple of questions i’d never done before which seemed to stop this fella dead in his tracks.

I like the way you think, Terry. But I'm sure you realize by now that you cannot depend on reason to make points in a religious discussion with a "true believer." They'll finally resort to something along the lines of, "It's not a matter of reason. It's a matter of faith."
Reason has no power against blind faith. When people have already made up their mind what they want to believe, no amount of persuasion or logic or reason will dissuade them. It's a lost cause.

Hi Petra and Atlantis!
On behalf of almost everyone here, I thank you for your hard work in sharing the documents and videos that the Borg is so determined to hide from the rank and file.
You'd think they'd be happy that lots of people want to redistribute their convention videos. That helps them reach many more people than might otherwise see them. But wait! They don't want thoughtful commentary, much less criticism, of their insidious message: "You must obey whatever we tell you, no matter what it costs you emotionally or financially. If we change those instructions tomorrow, you must forget that we ever put out the old instructions and explanations and immediately adopt the new ones as your own."
And they certainly don't proof of those outdated instructions and explanations floating around for just anyone to discover. From their standpoint, there is good reason for this. Some of them are downright embarrassing. While widely accepted back in the day as societal norms, some of the positions they held back then are rightly viewed today as racist and condescending. Many of their paternalistic blatherings are very hard to read without cringing.
Anyway, thanks again for all y'all do to get this information out while protecting the identities of your sources.

Don't these people realize they are disobeying their own religious masters and belying what they've been trying to push down everybody's throats all this time?
This kind of crap makes them liars and cheats and they deserve whatever happens when it backfires on them.

Uh, RubaDub, Gerald Ford has been dead since 2006. If you're talking about a career criminal named George Floyd, a lifelong thug who sired a number of illegitimate children whom he never supported and whose last arrest was for passing counterfeit bills, then yes, his death was one of the false premises upon which the present unrest is said to be based.
To be clear, despite anything else, Floyd did not deserve to die in such a display of depraved indifference, especially since he was already in custody and no longer resisting. But there are plenty of others who died in even more egregious examples of police misconduct. They would have been much more appropriate symbols for the protests to rally around.
Regardless, the statistically rare and isolated instances of police abuse cannot justify the rioting, burning, and looting the country has suffered in the last few months. The ongoing insurrection in certain cities has nothing whatsoever to do with peaceful protesting.

I know of a case where the wife for the same reason. She asked him to meet her to talk things over and wound up getting pregnant. And that's how she persuaded him to buy a bigger house for their growing family. Mission accomplished! Of course, he had to start working even more hours. She didn't work at all.

I remember some article from the Borg about 20 years ago about IVF. (Not their most recent tirade that equated donor sperm or eggs or even surrogacy with adultery.). Basically, it acknowledged that IVF using the sperm and eggs of a couple married to each other was acceptable. But then it added something along the lines of, "The way the sperm is extracted may raise concerns."
They are so concerned that someone might masturbate that they cast aspersions on it even when it's a necessary part of an approved method of trying to conceive a child. Sheesh! Get a life!
